When to Plant Snapdragon Seeds

Start Snapdragon seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the final frost of spring. Although it's possible to direct sow Snapdragon seeds outdoors after the last hard frost, germination rates are less predictable. Starting indoors is the preferred and recommended method.

Where to Plant Snapdragon Seeds

Snapdragons thrive with full sun exposure. Select a site with rich, well-draining, loose soil for optimal conditions. Prepare the bed by turning the soil to a depth of 8 inches.

How to Plant Snapdragon Seeds

Snapdragon seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Learn more about germination light requirements here.

Start indoors by sowing Snapdragon seeds into seed substrate, not soil, and compress firmly. Do not cover as Snapdragon seeds need sunlight to germinate. Keep the substrate moist and place trays in a warm, sunny location. Alternatively, you can use grow lights, providing seeds with about 16 hours of light exposure each day. Expect germination in 10-14 days. Once seedlings develop two leaves, thin to one seedling per cell or pot. Maintain a steady temperature of 60-70°F for the seedlings.

How to Care for Snapdragons

Transplant Snapdragons after the final frost of spring, spacing them 6-12 inches apart to ensure adequate room. Pinch off the tips once Snapdragons have 6 leaves to encourage richer, fuller blooming. After Snapdragons die back in the fall, cut them down and remove debris from the growing area.
